Strathmore East is Levitt's successor to Tanglewood at Coram.

Tanglewood was started in the summer of 1966.  By early 1967, the Tanglewood name was dropped in favor of Strathmore East, relating it to its companion community of Strathmore at Stony Brook a few miles away.  With Strathmore Village beginning shortly thereafter with its location between both communities--and sharing the Strathmore East exhibit center--a series of Levitt communities from Stony Brook into Coram was formed, along with several other Strathmore-brand communities that were developed later in the same areas of the North Shore as far east as Ridge.

Although the community name was changed to align with the re-establishment of the Strathmore brand on Long Island, Strathmore East retained its unique houseline from Tanglewood and continued to have an independent houseline until the community was completed.

LEVITTOWNBEYOND ADDS...
With the 1972 houseline at Strathmore East, we see the trend turning back to traditional exteriors.  Levitt was well ahead of its time experimenting with and introducing homes to the East Coast that were not only contemporary in exterior, but on the interior as well with more open layouts and features such as sunken rooms and conversation pits.  This styling lasted only a few years until it would reappear as a trend in the 1980s.  With the 1972 houseline, each contemporary plan was also available in a traditional exterior, and two homes--the Lexington and Monticello--were available only in traditional exterior.

The Monticello is a familiar home.  It first debuted as part of the houseline at Tanglewood at Coram--predecessor to Strathmore East--in 1966 as the Pembroke model.  Interestingly, the Monticello was not included in the original 1967 Strathmore East houseline.  Now, with a two-car front-loading garage and slightly updated, though the same basic plan, the Monticello serves as the largest basic home in the Strathmore East community's 1972 houseline, though other homes do have the potential for more living space with the optional finished rooms not included in the base price. 

Although the brochure announces the Monticello as a "center-hall" colonial, the home is actually a side-hall plan.  A true center-hall plan would have a room to either side of and accessible from the entry hall--typically the Dining Room to one side and the Living Room to the other--such as in Levitt's standard houseline "G"-series model including the Gladstone.

Three of the homes--the Pasadena, Vegas, and Houston II--would also make their debuts in New Jersey communities a year earlier.  The antecedents of the Pasadena and Houston II debuted in Winslow Crossing and The Knolls in 1971 as the Alton and Sutter models, respectively.  Both the Vegas and Houston II were part of the Contempra at Matawan Borough 1972 houseline, which was exclusively contemporary, where both included in the sale price the expanded features that were optional in Strathmore East.
